Cure Cancer - Dr Venessa Chin

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself?

I am 41, a medical oncologist and cancer researcher.  I’m originally from Canberra, but did my medical training in Adelaide.  I moved to Sydney for my speciality training and live here with my husband and two children.

2. What inspired you to become a cancer researcher?

After finishing my medical oncology speciality training it became obvious to me that personalised therapies guided by biomarkers was the future.  It was also clear that genomic sequencing was going to play a large role in the cancer field.  I decided I wanted to learn more about this and also “try out” research so decided to embark on a PhD at the Garvan Institute.  It was there that I was introduced to clinical genomics.  I really loved what I was doing and decided to continue research after completing my PhD.

3. What is your favourite thing about being a researcher?

I love being able to conduct research that will have a tangible effect on patients with cancer.  I very much enjoy being able to utilise new technologies or approaches in improving outcomes for patients.  It’s a nice compliment doing both the clinical work and research work – my clinical experience keeps my research grounded and my research background opens up opportunities for my patients.

4. Are there any challenges you have experienced/that concern you as a female researcher specifically?

Although we are still the minority in the research sector, I have been lucky enough to work in labs with very senior and supportive women.  I would say my biggest challenge is juggling work and family life.  Science doesn’t always conform to the “9-5” working day, so that can be difficult at times.

5. Everyday Cashmere have partnered with Cure Cancer and are donating 10% of every purchase towards cancer research between April 19th – May 9th. Why are partnerships like this important to young researchers like you?

For early career researchers, groups like Cure Cancer are fundamentally important to give our research the traction it needs in those early years.  Funding like this gives me the opportunity to conduct bold research which acts as a foundation for establishing large projects.

6. Everyday Cashmere are passionate about wellness and sustainability. How do you try to practice wellness in your everyday life?

I try to practice what I preach!  I tell all my patients to exercise regularly and eat well.  I try my best to stay active, do at least 2 organised exercise activities per week as well as incidental exercise.  Around Easter eating well is more difficult than usual, but I try to eat fresh whenever I can!

7. What do you think of your Everyday Cashmere piece and where will you be wearing it?

I think it is soft, comfortable and very stylish.  I will likely be wearing this most of winter!  Probably mostly on weekends, going out for lunch…perhaps a small glass of wine…

8. What is your favourite thing about being a mum?

Those first-thing-in-the-morning hugs are pretty wonderful.  I love the crazy, moment-to-moment kind of vibe they give to everything.

9. How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day this year?

Leisurely lunch with my family and my sister’s family.  There will definitely be some jumping on the trampoline and chocolate involved.
